Honda’s ATC 70 Was the Freedom Machine for the Under-10 Set

It is the 1980s and your parents have the Honda ATC90’s (ATC stood for All Terrain Cycle) all loaded up in the bed of Dad’s three-quarter ton pickup, towing the 23-foot travel trailer for another great weekend in the desert or sand dunes. You spend the weekend adjusting the air pressure on the ATVs balloon tires, finding that sweet spot allowing you some feeling of suspension travel. Every corner was a near disaster, every landing over a jump was nearly tragic, but you survived it all. And you will do it again in a few weeks.

Matthew McNulty had the chance to hop in the driver's seat of Honda Powersports "factory" upgraded Talon 1000 equipped with a turbocharger courtesy of Jackson Racing (JR). While it takes a few tweaks to fit this new system into their trusty platform perfectly, the tuning from JR is so precise that the HRC team has been rocking it for years. And now consumers, like Mr. McNulty, have the chance to rip like a racecar driver (well, almost). He had a few good things to say in his comparison, but we'll spare you the deep insights and thoughtful opinions for a few anecdotes and pretty photos by Justin W. Coffey.

A Little Backstory About… Honda Powersports

Honda Powersports has partnered with Maersk, a logistics organization, to open a new distribution center in Phoenix, Arizona. The 150,000 square-foot facility will serve to help the company better ship and deliver machines like their ATVs and UTVs.

As spring came to a close, we traveled to Johnson Valley in California to meet up with Honda Powersports for a scorching hot ride through the desert. Their flagship Talon 1000 (two- and four-seater) side-by-side is now sporting Showa suspension from the factory, and we had the opportunity to test them out through deep canyons, rocky hill climbs, and sandy washes. While you'll probably see how much fun we had in this gallery, you'll need to read our review to learn exactly how that new system handled the punishment.
